2020 A.D. What a year!?

As we quickly move through the holiday season, 2021 is near. Will it be better for Americans than 2020? I believe that it will be so!

Our medical and scientific communities know much more about the Covid virus than months ago. The death rates are less than ½ % of those that were diagnosed with the virus (under age 70 and no/few comorbidities). Several tested vaccines are almost ready for distribution. Those people under 70-years of age that attend K-12 school and college are virtually unaffected, yet most schools remain closed, or in a ‘virtual’ classrooms which is degrading their education and progress. Ridiculous and unsupported by science!

This is NOT another Covid-19 Article - What Happens Next?

Unemployment Line
It seems like a decade or more that Covid-19 struck America. Many died from its affects and I feel so sorry for them, their families, and friends...they will truly be missed. Then came the ‘lock-down.’ Most businesses had to close completely, and many will never reopen. Most were SMBs – Small-, Medium-sized Businesses - even with a slow reopening, many cannot re-open and be profitable, so bankruptcy comes next. Mergers and acquisitions will happen to some of the remainder.

How about those employed – senior executives down to the lowest, corporate level? A number can work remotely, but many cannot. Will all of those jobs return? I doubt it. Companies will see that remote workers can reduce expensive office space and all related expenses. Some work well from home while others do not. Some supervisors can work well with it and others cannot. I doubt that many companies will resume business with the same number of employees working from the ‘old’ office(s).

SO, HOW IS TODAY’S JOB MARKET?

For many, not so great. For others, it’s terrific – they still have their job, got promoted, or landed a new one!

There is no question that if you follow the federal government’s, monthly ‘unemployment rate,’ the percentages have dropped to (supposedly) the lowest point in recorded history. Presently, 3.6% of Americans are unemployed through May 2019. Really? There are several different formulas the government could use, however generally the one provided to the media, etc. is the lowest percentage of those truly unemployed and those actively looking for work. I have greater trust in other formulas at their disposal.

How To Combat Age Discrimination With Your Resume!

5/22/2019

Go back 20 years and think of a time when fresh graduates would easily find an entry-level job and make their way up the ladder for the next 30-40 years before retiring. This almost never happens in the today’s job market. Earlier, employees used to stay-on with their employers for a long stretch of time, that age discrimination in hiring was not an issue.

These days, employees normally remain with a company for around two years before searching for something new. This turns into an issue for employment seekers who are 50+. When they apply for another job, the employer might ignore their profile because of the fact that they just have around 10 or 15 years before retirement. This is age discrimination. To avoid this, your best option is to remove data on your resume that gives the hiring manager an idea of how old you are. More importantly, don't take your resume so far into history that (a) the industry has changed, (b) technology has overtaken those positions and (c) more recent duties are similar, or identical. All it does is show 'age' without skills and achievements that are portable to what you would love to do next.
