SAGE ADVICE FOR RESUMES, INTERVIEWING, AND MORE!
- By bruce w clagg
A Simple ‘Thank You?’
Okay, your ‘marketing masterpiece’ of a resume has earned you the interview whether it is with the DM (hiring Decision-Maker), someone in Human Resources, or a third-party recruiter. You believe that the interview went well. I’m sure that you shook hands and said “thank you” as you departed.
Interview Minutiae (that could gain you The Offer, or not!)
"The Devil IS in the Details"
We’ve all heard “The devil is in the details” and never more true than with a face-to-face job interview. I can author a separate article on how to dress, colors, earring size, mustaches, beards, perfume/cologne, necklaces, makeup, jewelry, etc.
Let’s focus on the moment that you pull into the parking lot of the building where you are about to interview...
How Do I Handle The “Salary” Question?
You can certainly expect the questions regarding salary during the interviewing process (perhaps several times) be it from Human Resources, a recruiter, online, and/or the hiring decision-maker (DM). The following is making the assumption that because of age, or whatever, that you are not taking an obvious professional step backward! (That is for another article)
HR, Demand It... Regardless of the job title!!!
An oft omitted item in the sequence of events is that a true Application for Employment should be required before ANY interviews. If one has not officially applied, one cannot officially be denied. This step used to be cast in stone by HR Departments and company policies. Today, not as much. Pass the word to the DMs, HR!! DMs - "We forgot (?).” DEMAND IT, REGARDLESS OF JOB TITLE!
Something near one-third of my resume clients continue with some amount of interview and/or career coaching. I’ve authored thousands of resumes and coached more than 900 clients in the past 11+ years. Prior to becoming one of the only two, as of this writing, Certified Professional Resume Writers, Certified Employment Interview Professionals, AND Certified Professional Career Coaches in Texas, I was a VP/GM in the high-tech sector for more than 30 years. My clients come from everywhere!
Interviewing? SELL THE FIT!
Congratulations! Your new resume and cover letter (email) landed you an interview! Now what?
Of course, research the company, mission statement, financials (if publicly held), background of the executive team, Search the company name for recent articles, etc. Get your “uniform of the day” in order, hair trimmed…oh, you know the routine. If it’s a third-party recruiter you will not know the company name, so be on your toes and your questions will change accordingly.
