SAGE ADVICE FOR RESUMES, INTERVIEWING, AND MORE!
- By bruce w clagg
It seems like a decade or more that Covid-19 struck America. Many died from its affects and I feel so sorry for them, their families, and friends...they will truly be missed. Then came the ‘lock-down.’ Most businesses had to close completely, and many will never reopen. Most were SMBs – Small-, Medium-sized Businesses - even with a slow reopening, many cannot re-open and be profitable, so bankruptcy comes next. Mergers and acquisitions will happen to some of the remainder. How about those employed – senior executives down to the lowest, corporate level? A number can work remotely, but many cannot. Will all of those jobs return? I doubt it. Companies will see that remote workers can reduce expensive office space and all related expenses. Some work well from home while others do not. Some supervisors can work well with it and others cannot. I doubt that many companies will resume business with the same number of employees working from the ‘old’ office(s). Most of us would miss the casual, ad-hoc conversations, suggestions, managerial comments, face-to-face dialog...shaking hands, et al. I fear that things will never return to usual within the business world. WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY? Prior to Covid-19 hitting America, it was estimated that 75% of ‘working people’ had their resumes on the street! How about now? Many companies along with their employees will not return.
GET PROACTIVE! A new, shiny resume and cover letter (email, these days) is first. There are not as many postings on the online job boards today. Companies are forced to re-open slowly. That said, even prior to ‘the virus,’ ~85% of all possible positions were not posted anywhere yet those job boards are where, probably, 99.9% of American job-seekers go. Ironic. Only about 15% of all possible positions are posted anywhere and now receive 10,000 to 15,000 resumes for every posting. Good luck with that! Third-party recruiters help place less than 2% of all positions and the vast majority are Director-level and above. I am relatively certain that you do not know how to find your potential boss with another company, another industry, and/or another location. If you did, you could email that person since most hiring Decision-Makers (DMs) would replace 25% to 50% of their staff and have no job postings anywhere! Emailing them with your new resume attached shows proactivity, research, written and verbal skills. Virtually no one else will do it. I would think that you want to be different, yet professional and stay away from the job boards that will be received by ATS software, not a human, screened (more than 98% fail), and end in a department that cannot hire you anyway...Human Resources. They vet the surviving resumes and only forward a small handful to the DM. THAT IS LIKE GOING ACROSS THE STREET BY WAY OF CANADA! There are a few ‘certified, professionals’ that have dealt with similar circumstances for years. This is the time to invest in yourself with a great, new resume and (email formatted) cover letter. A new, LinkedIn Profile and guidance on how to find your future boss so that you can go after that ‘85% group’ of un-posted opportunities...learning to interview differently, but more easily and much more productively. Enter the ‘job war’ trained and prepared! Your competitors will not bother with it and wonder why things are not working out and whom to blame.
